Mostly everything that we bought or registered for came from a recommendation. Either from a friend/family, neighbor, or the blog world, the suggestions have been invaluable! So, I thought I would put together a little Newborn Essential post to help all those soon to be momma’s out there! Here are all the things that are a must for the first month.
Fisher Price Swing- Charlotte loved the swing from day one. Seriously…she was enjoying the swing even in the hospital nursery! It is nice to put her in it when she is awake and we are eating or need both hands. The first two weeks this was also the place where she would nap. Even if it wasn’t on, it was a great place to put her!
Netflix Streaming- This is obviously more for the parents than for the baby. BUT, I watch a ton more TV now that I am breastfeeding. Especially when she was cluster feeding, I knew I would be parked out on the couch for 4 to 5 hours. Netflix streaming has been my entertainment!
Car Seat- This is a no-brainer, but every newborn needs a car seat. We decided to go with the Chicco Keyfit and the little Miss loves her car seat (thank goodness!).
Gerber Cloth Diapers- We use these exclusively for our burp clothes. We have one at every changing table and every “station” where I feed. They are super absorbent and affordable.
Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter- Yes, it is a mouthful to say, but I love this stuff!! You all know I love me some Lanolin for chapstick; but for all you nursing moms out there, definitely give Earth Mama a try!
Miracle Blanket- I cannot say enough good things about this swaddling blanket!! Charlotte loves to be swaddled and we have fallen in love with this blanket. It keeps her super tight all through the night and I really think it helps her sleep so well at night!
Fisher Price Rock n’ Play- We bought this to put next to our bed during the first month. Charlotte sleeps so well in it and we think she really likes that it is inclined. We have since moved it to her nursery where she sleeps for her naps and at night….hopefully we will be able to move her to her crib this month!
Nursing Tanks- For the breastfeeding moms, I highly suggest nursing tanks. They are super convenient; especially when you have company and are using a cover. My favorites are here and here.
Aquaphor- I really love using aquaphor for dry skin. It was suggested to me by a neighbor and I’m so glad I had some on hand before coming home from the hospital. I put just a tiny amount on the dry areas and by the next day, the dry skin is almost gone!
Let me know if you have any questions!! Hopefully this was helpful!

Aquaphor REALLY is the best. I like that you can buy it in tubes or you can buy it in tubs so that you easily just twist off the tops in case you have a major rash situation. I always keep a tube around the house for chapped lips (and I even use it for my tattoos).
If you need any tips for good Netflix movies or shows, let me know-- we watch a lot of that around here! In fact, we just recently bought a movie because I sent back one of our own and not the Netflix movie so they charged us $15 and never contacted us to send their back-- and I forgot!
Gosh I remember the newborn essentials....so needed right? The nipple cream was a life saver and the bouncer!
Hi Katie! Jamie pointed me in your direction and I'm so glad she did! I just found out this week that I'm having a baby boy, and I'm SO overwhelmed by all the things I need to learn and buy before he arrives this spring! So your list was super helpful... thanks! :-)
You are so right about Netflix streaming! I'm working my way through Orange is the New Black right now... And I wish Henk liked the swaddle - he way prefers to have his hands out, but then that allows him to be wiggly and wake himself up.
The swing was a life saver for us too. I remember one night we had to rock AOI back to sleep in that way.
OMG, we have to dust it for next month.
